A Note About Buying Books on the Internet
The large book listing services that you are probably familiar with--Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Alibris, Abebooks--take out a fixed percentage (8 to 20 percent) of each completed sale that is made using their services. They also charge a monthly fee and reimburse the dealer only a partial amount of his shipping costs for mailing the book to the customer. To compensate for this, most used book dealers mark up the prices of their inventory listed on these sites. In contrast, when you purchase books directly from dealers through their websites, there are no intermediaries involved, eliminating the need to mark up prices. | |
